This website is maintained by the Merit Contractors' Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Merit Contractors' Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is a group of open shop construction contractors who provide human resources solutions for their employees such as a comprehensive benefit plan, excellent working conditions, access to all construction sites, meaning and practical training programs, retirement programs, job search assistance, and more.

Merit NL is dedicated to addressing the issues of the open shop construction sector and is the only voice in Newfoundland and Labrador that speaks to government and other organizations on behalf of our membership. We represent contractors in all trades of the open shop sector of the construction industry, who together with their employees, comprise almost 80% of all construction workers in the province.

The term "open shop" describes a workplace where membership or non-membership in a union is not a condition of employment. In construction contracting, it especially refers to a situation where owners, architects, developers, construction managers and/or general contractors or others do not consider the union status of a contractor's employees when awarding a construction contract. For Merit members, the term connotes freedom of choice and fairness in the workplace.

Merit Contractors' Association was first founded in 1986 in Alberta, following the 1982-85 recession. Merit is now established in most provinces in Canada and is also affiliated with the open shop associations of Ontario and British Columbia. (Quebec and Prince Edward Island are the only provinces without an open shop association.)

Merit Contractors' Association of Newfoundland and Labrador was incorporated in 2001, and in September 2003, a full-time general manager was hired who set up Merit NL's office on Torbay Road in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Merit NL is a member of the Canadian Coalition of Open Shop Contractors' Associations (CCOSCA).
